Have you ever felt that nudge from God? Sometimes it is a gentle push and other times it is like a sledgehammer upside the back of your head! Regardless, you know in your heart that you have a decision to make. Will I muster the courage to step forward into the calling from God or will I reject what He wants for my life?

Confirming your calling will go a long way toward building courage for your next steps.

First, figure out if your calling is from God or not.

Ask yourself the following three questions.

  • Will it bring glory to God? The glorification of God is our primary purpose. Will this calling afford you additional opportunities to bring glory to God?
  • Will it help others? God is not interested in your career advancement as much as He is interested in the advancement of His Kingdom. That means your calling should focus on building others up and not your platform or bank account.
  • Will it be easy? God never promises easy. In fact, He promises just the opposite. If your calling does not require you to rely on God rest assured, it is not from Him.

Second, seek wise counsel from people in your life.

Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail without good advice. But they succeed when there are many advisers.” And Proverbs 12:15, “The way of foolish people seems right to them. But those who are wise listen to advice.”

The key to seeking wise counsel from others is vetting those you are seeking advice from. Are they biblically sound and mature people? Are they willing to tell you what you need to hear and not just what you want to hear? Do they have any expertise in the area that you are seeking wisdom on?

Finally, ask God to confirm your calling.

Do not confuse this with asking God for a sign. Asking God for a specific sign puts Him to the test and shows a lack of faith. Rather asking him for guidance and wisdom. James 1:5 says, “If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He will give it to you. God gives freely to everyone and doesn’t find fault.”

If you follow the above three steps God will make your calling clear. Take courage and step forward into the new reality that God is calling you to!
