Where is the Outrage?

Where is the Outrage?

We live in an outrage culture. This is an undeniable fact. People are offended by almost everything these days…

  • Uber Eats deliveries that do not arrive on time
  • People that buy too much toilet paper
  • By political signs that do not match their own
  • People who wear masks
  • People who do not wear masks properly
  • People who do not wear masks
  • People who do not wear two masks!
  • Vaccines
  • Mandates
  • Curfews
  • Churches that have not re-opened
  • Churches that have re-opened
  • People who use identity-first language
  • People who use person-first language

We can argue all day long about any of the things listed above, get in heated social media battles, and unfollow lifelong friends over them. Frustration and anger seem to fuel people these days. It has gotten to the point that if you are not openly offended and outraged by things that other people are, they assume the worst in you.

Let us be honest for a moment, in the light of eternity, the vast majority of the things that get us worked up are not worth getting upset about.

There are things worth getting worked up about, things like racial injustice, oppression, etc. These are things that would have caused Jesus to respond and should cause us to respond.

Churches have been quick to jump on board with racial justice, human trafficking, rescuing women from the sex industry, etc. These are all good things. These are things that should offend us and move us to action.

God does command us to speak up for those who are oppressed and to fight for them. Proverbs 31:8 could not make it clearer.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.”

So, you should be offended and outrage when you see injustice. Proverbs 31:8 is much more than a justification for outrage. It is a calling to action. Outrage without action is complacency.

Now let me draw your attention to something you may not be aware of.

Do you know what people group is abused and neglected at a much higher rate than any other?

People with disabilities!

Let that sink in for a moment…

Why are people not offended by this? Where is the outrage? Where are the protests? Why is this not trending on social media? Why is my email inbox not being filled by companies telling how they are responding to this injustice? Where are the commercials? Where are the churches designing ministries around this injustice? Why?

You see this is what gets me fired up! This is what keeps me up at night. This is what makes me angry.

Only one in every ten churches has any intentional outreach or programming for their disability communities. How can this be??? If churches genuinely care about oppression, discrimination, injustice they can NOT be silent on this. In a world of silence surrounding this injustice, the church has an opportunity and an obligation to speak up.

I have not just written this blog to share what offends me and hope that you will be outraged too. If we are just fueling the rage without offering a solution, we are part of the problem. This is what I have committed my professional ministry calling to. To a ministry that answers the command from God in Proverbs 31:8.

If you are outraged by the injustice that the disability community faces and you want your church to be part of the answer Ability Ministry is here to help. We are so passionate about it we offer FREE consultation for churches.

This is worth being outraged about. This is something that Jesus would have addressed. Will you? Let us help.
